Racing Engines - High Performance Parts
The greatest builders of racing engines don't overlook the basic parts at the heart of the internal combustion engine. It's not the flashy things that win races; it's remembering that high performance racing engines need high performance parts. Here's your basic checklist:
Engine Pistons & Rings. Engine Pistons are the key moving elements for the entire engine cycle, moving up-and-down in the cylinders to generate power and transform it to efficient rotary motion. Piston rings provide the moving seals between the outside of the piston and the inner-lining of the cylinder. The piston rings close the fuel/air mixture into the combustion chamber during the compression stroke, and prevent the exhaust from leaking into the sump during the combustion stroke. On the underside, the piston rings keep the oil in the sump from migrating into the combustion chamber during piston movement.
Spark Plugs. Spark plugs supply the ignition component to the air/fuel mixture so that combustion takes place. The ignition spark must occur in perfect timing for the most effective and efficient combustion process.
Connecting Rod & Crank Shaft. The connecting rod connects the pistons to the crankshaft. As the pistons move up and down in the cylinders during the engine cycles, the crankshaft rotates and converts straight line motion into rotary motion.
Intake & Exhaust Valves. During the intake stroke, the intake valve must let air into the combustion chamber at the perfect time. During the exhaust stroke, the exhaust valve must eject fuel byproducts at the perfect time. Both valves must remain properly closed and sealed during the compression and combustion strokes.
