Racing Engines - Power at the Core
Racing engines come down to one basic principle - Generate and effectively use more power than the other guy!

Here's a successful racing engine at its core:

  1. Put a small amount of high-energy fuel in a tightly enclosed space;
  2. Compress it and ignite it; and
  3. Release the largest amount of energy possible without exploding.
A flawless engine cycle that efficiently harnesses, distributes, and utilizes its power is the heart and soul of all racing engines.

Racing Engines - A Universal Starting Point
Most racing engines start at the same basic place in history -- the internal combustion engine co-invented by German engineer, Nikolaus Otto, in 1867. About a decade later, Otto expanded on the principle and devised the four-stroke combustion cycle (also known as the Otto cycle), which is now widely used in automobile racing and other motor sports.

Nearly all racing engines rely on the four-stroke combustion cycle to convert fuel into rotary motion. The four strokes are known as the intake stroke, compression stroke, power (combustion) stroke, and exhaust stroke. Reciprocating internal combustion is the universal starting point for most racing engines in the motor sports world.

Racing Engines - Pulling More Performance from a Universal Standard
If most racing engines rely on the same four-stroke engine cycle in the same internal combustion format, what's the key to winning races? Simply, success comes from incremental increases in power, while avoiding incremental degradation towards heat failure. Therefore, a great engine builder focuses on the little things that generate the few extra horsepower or decrease the few extra degrees. Remarkably, all other things being equal, it's the high performance parts and coatings that make the difference in successful racing engines.
